Welcome to Reception at Coulsdon C of E Primary School

At Coulsdon C of E we are proud of our Reception provision, where children begin their school journey in a caring, stimulating and Christian environment. Families are warmly welcomed and supported as their children settle into school life, grow in confidence and develop a love of learning.

Our Reception Classes

Reception at Coulsdon C of E is made up of just one class:

Class Teacher: Mr Edwards

Supporting the class throughout the week are experienced Early Years practitioners: Mrs Hollibone and Mrs Rasolli — both of which help to ensure that our Reception children feel safe, happy and ready to learn.

Our Curriculum in Reception

In Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, building on experiences from Nursery and laying strong foundations for future learning. The EYFS curriculum at Coulsdon C of E focuses on seven areas of learning:

Prime Areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Physical Development

  • Communication and Language

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Children learn through a blend of play-based exploration, child-initiated activities and adult-led teaching, with continuous provision opportunities designed to help them practise and extend skills taught during adult input.

Phonics and Early Reading

We teach early reading and phonics using the Read, Write Inc programme. This structured and progressive approach helps children develop strong phonics knowledge and early reading skills with confidence.
