Religious Education
Intent
At Coulsdon C of E Primary School Religious Education plays a core role in teaching and learning and is regarded as a core subject. It is at the centre of the distinctive Christian nature of our school; interwoven with our school biblical values of the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5 v22) and in our motto 'Together growing in mind, body and spirit'.
The school follows the Diocese of Southwark Religious Education Syllabus which enables the children to experience learning about Christianity and all the major world faiths. This was reviewed and updated in 2024 to reflect the world around us.
Implementation:
RE is taught throughout the school and is taught and delivered in an age-appropriate way for EYFS, through to Key Stage 2. Within RE lessons, children have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills which enables each child to become religiously and philosophically literate and to ask and answer thought provoking questions about their own and other’s beliefs. Children have the opportunity to deepen their understanding in RE through talking to visitors and going on regular visits to St John’s Church and other places of worship.
In RE children are encouraged to:
- think and explore
- question and challenge
- learn and experience
- reflect and engage in action
Impact
The impact of teaching high quality RE is not only reflected in the children’s spiritual development but also in their achievement in their learning. Assessment takes place in line with other subjects to reflect three key lenses in each topic:
Thinking
Believing
Living
