Design and Technology
Design and Technology at Coulsdon C of E
Intent
DT planning inspires children through a broad range of practical experiences to create innovative designs which solve real and relevant problems within a variety of different contexts. Children explore their ideas recording their experiences, and exploring the work of others and evaluate existing products to inform their own design choices. Within design and technology, children reflect, evaluate and innovate when designing and creating solutions to improve designs. Children learn about key events and the individuals who have helped shape the world, showing the real impact of design and technology on the wider environment. All children are able to access the same rich curriculum which will be adapted to meet their needs which inspires children to become the next generation of innovators.
Implementation
Throughout each year, classes will undertake topics in construction, textiles and food or drink. Teaching incorporates elements of product analysis, research, design, make and evaluate which will be evidenced in work books. A range of skills are taught, ensuring that children are aware of any associated health and safety issues that may apply. Key vocabulary is built into each lesson and technical vocabulary is emphasised and displayed. Children revisit and consolidate skills in each Key Stage building upon prior knowledge.
In the Early Years
Children have free access to construction toys and materials in the indoor and outdoor environment. Other activities may be initiated by an adult to support the development of a particular skill.
In Key stage 1 and 2
All children have four key elements to Design Technology – Investigate, Design, Make and Evaluate. Children will think reflectively about their work and make changes to their project that will improve it. Work will be recorded in booklets.
Impact
Children are able to use a range of tools appropriately and safely. Children understand the vocabulary associated with their topic and use it accurately when talking about the design process. Children are reflective and able to analyse existing products and their own work and look for ways to make improvements. Children speak enthusiastically about Design and Technology and show an interest in design and innovation.
