The Role of the Governing Body

The Governing Body works in close co-operation with Hilary Grainger our Headteacher in taking general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement.

The statutory role of the Governing Body includes:

  • managing the school budget
  • making sure the curriculum is balanced and broad based. (As a Voluntary Aided school we take particular responsibility for the religious education curriculum)
  • appointing the headteacher and deputy headteacher and determining how other appointments will be made and staff are managed
  • drawing up an action plan after an inspection

As a Voluntary Aided school the Governors have special responsibility to fund a proportion of the cost of the maintenance of the school buildings.

We also consider that an important part of our role is to maintain the distinctive Christian ethos of the school through our links with St John’s Church.

The Governing Body normally meets four times a year as a whole group and in committees during the intervening times. The committees are responsible for the school premises, finance, admissions, personnel, curriculum and communications. One of the governors is designated as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Governor. We also appoint governors to take a special interest in Literacy and Numeracy. A small Performance Management Team is made up from the Governing Body.

St John’s Church Parochial Church Council appoints four foundation governors to the Governing Body, and the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education appoints two. In addition, the Rector is ex officio a foundation governor.

The Governor’s make a report to the school each year near the beginning of the autumn term.
